Chief Yellow Wolf was one of the last survivors of the Nez Perce War. Lucullus McWhorter gained the trust of and unprecedented access to Yellow Wolf. Through that relationship this first person narrative, told by Yellow Wolf himself came into being. 

Researchers consider this account of the Native American strategy and policy to be a foundation book for any study of the Nez Perce.
